#Keetom Takooteeoo Maheekun (The Return of the Wolf)

Okay, the death of Elizabeth Carruthers is still hitting me hard (Seriously, so hard), but I can at least appreciate that the show is using it to bring Josephette to the forefront.

She’s been a recurring character all season long, but with very minimal dialogue or personal actions.  Usually she’s been relegated to standing in the background, giving Significant Looks as Elizabeth dealt with other people.  However, dialogue between other characters -- and the few times she’s been allowed to act on her own like when she figured out the Browns sabotaged their works -- have established that she is just as competent and knowledgeable in the fur trade as Elizabeth.  She just had to be publicly quiet because she is even less able to act on her own due to her color.  I wouldn’t go so far as to say that she was the power behind Elizabeth, since Elizabeth was plenty powerful on her own, but she was definitely a partner, not a servant.

Elizabeth cannot actually leave Carruthers & Co. to Josephette in her will -- the law of the time simply won’t allow it -- but with the the stipulation that the Power of Attorney serve at her direction, she has in effect become the head of the company.  Like Elizabeth, she needs a white male figurehead to be the titular owner, and Douglas Brown will serve for her just as he did for Elizabeth, but it will nonetheless be her company.  And given that she has already figured out that Grant is behind Elizabeth’s death, and has made it clear that she will not take any of this lying down, I expect her to be coming for him for bear next season.

I’d almost feel sorry for Grant if he didn’t have that -- and so much more -- coming.
